Miscues lead to Lady Dawgs’ first loss in district play
Good teams will take advantage of errors and miscues by opponents and romp to victory, which is what happened to the Burnet High School softball team in an 11-4 loss to Salado March 25.
“That just wasn’t us,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “That’s not the way we play. Salado’s a great softball team. We’re not going to beat them by making mistakes and errors. It was a little bit of everything: not hitting, not making a throw, not catching the ball.”
Wooten noted the miscues were contagious and it was difficult to stop one from becoming several.
“We had a couple of errors on the field, we gave up a couple of home runs and little things that led to runners on base,” she said. “And they capitalized on those free bases.”
The Lady Eagles (14-6, 2-1 District 19-4A) recorded 10 hits and plated runs in five of the seven innings, while the Lady Dawgs (17-4, 2-1) had seven hits and four errors.
Burnet pitcher Kyleigh Mott, who was credited with the loss, had five strikeouts, and Lanee McCurry had two hits.
“I think they were disappointed because they can see we can do better,” Wooten said. “We were hitting the ball well. When we put the ball in play, we were hitting the ball hard. They were making great plays on defense. Our defense struggled.”
Burnet travels to face Taylor (11-3, 2-1), 355 FM 973, on Tuesday, March 29. The junior varsity playst at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
